Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such treatments should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated behavioural support.
