Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
